Sector laggard

headcount down ≥10% YoY while the sector's median headcount is flat or growing — the decline is the company's own, not the industry's; the strongest form of 'shrinking'

the signature — what the register must show
staff −10%+ YoY (prior staff ≥5)
sector median staff move ≥ 0 (86 SIC divisions benchmarked over the whole live population)

Why it matters

Shrinking against a flat or growing sector: the decline is the company's own doing, not the industry's. Absolute shrinking often just mirrors the sector; this filter removes that excuse.

The play

The strongest form of 'shrinking' for both theses: management problem (credit/turnaround) or an owner winding down (buyout) — either way, the peer comparison is the opening line of the conversation.

How it's kept honest

The badge is recomputed nightly across the whole index, and re-evaluated live the moment a company files — so a match is always a statement about the current register, not a stale list. Like every signal on the radar: a prompt to look closer, never a verdict.
